Job Description
Dental practice, management of patients, and dental prescriptions will be accomplished in accordance with applicable AFMS clinical practice guidelines and JCAHO/HSI standards and instructions set forth in facility where privileges are awarded. Examines, diagnoses and treats by surgical means abnormalities and injuries of oral and maxillofacial structures. Examines patients and interprets and evaluates radiographs of facial structures to determine the nature and extent of abnormalities and injuries of jaws and adjacent bones and tissues. Prescribes and performs types of surgery and fixation required in treatment. Administers or supervises the administration of IV conscious sedations. Performs oral surgical operations to remove infected, impacted, or malposed teeth, to prepare jaws for prosthodontic appliances, and to remove abnormal growths, cysts, and foreign bodies from jaws and oral structures. Performs oral surgical operations, including the surgical and non-surgical extraction of teeth, to ensure dental readiness during deployments. Prescribes preoperative and postoperative care. Prepares diagnostic and treatment records. Provides consultation services. Follows procedures governing administration of oral surgical service. Provides guidance for the implementation of comprehensive programs to continuously improve prevention and treatment of dental disease to ensure maximum personnel wartime readiness and combat capability.
Job Requirements
Shall hold a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or a doctor of dental medicine (DMD) degree from an American Dental Association accredited college or university. Shall have and maintain an active, valid unrestricted, current dental license (with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions) in a US jurisdiction. License must correspond to DEA registration number. Possess a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number in order to write prescriptions for controlled substances. Must have completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery, acceptable to the Surgeon General, HQ USAF. Shall have performed oral and maxillofacial surgery, including extraction of impacted third molars with IV conscious sedation, for at least 12 out of the last 18 months.
