Job Description

Perform in-patient nursing care in Term Nursery, Level III Nursery, and/or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Provides routine care of the term well newborn, provides teaching to mothers/significant others on care of newborn when assigned to Term Nursery. Provides breast feeding instruction. Provides an advanced level of nursing care to critically ill neonates based upon assessed needs of the patient. This care includes but is not limited to: continually observing, monitoring and assessing the patient's condition; performing life saving measures. Must be able to attend high-risk deliveries; perform resuscitations within established Neonatal resuscitation algorithms; interpret signs and symptoms of deterioration and initiate corrective action; assist physicians with complex clinical procedures; manage equipment and devices including ventilators; monitor invasive and noninvasive equipment; measure patient progress during fluid resuscitation; interpret abnormal laboratory test values; administer other complex treatments such as total enteral feedings, parenteral administration of electrolytes, fluids, blood and blood components and authorized specialized medications, such as IV push medications; monitor vasoactive drug infusions; adhere to infection control and safety policies and procedures. Operate and monitor specialized therapeutic and resuscitative equipment: validating that medication orders are within established standards; perform family teaching to include discharge and car seat exchange instructions; teach breastfeeding techniques. Plans comprehensive nursing care for patients which includes, but is not limited to: implementing the Nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation) and aspects of nursing care appropriate to the Term Nursery/Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Collect and record data pertaining to patient health status: use patient data to determine nursing diagnoses and preparing an individualized plan of care to meet the patient's needs; assess patient and family's psychosocial, educational and spiritual needs; teach family members. This plan determines the interventions suitable for each patient/family. Provide complete personal care or assisting family members with performing the patient's personal care. Administer physician prescribed medications; perform therapeutic measures and procedures as prescribed by the physician or required as a standard of nursing practice. Apply scientific knowledge to resolve problems related to physical, physiological, psychological, social or rehabilitative needs. Incorporate teaching and learning activities into action plan; observe, evaluate, document and report patient signs/symptoms and response to therapy. Safely operating patient care equipment; initiating life saving measures in absence of a physician; recognizing, interprets and records patients' signs and symptoms, and abnormal laboratory values that require the notification and/or intervention of a physician. Teach health care instructions to patients and/or family; incorporate the family in treatment plan and decision-making for care, provide supportive care to patients and family during terminal illness; submit all required reports before the end of the shift. Responses to emergencies which includes but is not limited to: recognizing emergency situations, calling for help, providing life support consistent with education and training: functioning calmly and efficiently in emergency situations. Independently provide care for infants IAW established staffing patterns currently being used in the Term Nursery/NICU. Provides clinical oversight to technicians/LPNs when providing patient care. Completes orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines. Participates in the orientation preceptor mentoring, and training of newly assigned personnel, to include medical technicians, as appropriate. Serves and participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups, and assists with decision-making and process improvement. Participates in customer service initiatives, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services. Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.

Job Requirements

Must have at least (24) months within the last (36) months of level 2B nursery experience. Must have Level III experience within the past (24) months. Knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, disease process pathophysiology, neonatal pharmacology, and procedures. Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care. Knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records. Ability to synthesize data from a variety of sources and make appropriate clinical decisions. Effectively communicate and collaborate with a multidisciplinary care team for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues. Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements. This includes proper use of approved abbreviations. Possess and maintain current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Shall have at least (24) months of experience within the last (36) months.
